THE WEEKLY KNIGHT
-------------------
(for July 18, 1992)
The Harvard Cup is the only event of its kind in the US.
Pitting Grandmasters against some of the better chess-playing
programs currently available, the exhibition gives us all a
first-hand glimpse into the progress (or lack thereof) being
made by chess computers.
The third edition of the Cup was held on 11 July at Hunter
College in New York City as part of the two week-long US
Chess Festival. Similar to previous years, a round robin
format was employed, with each human playing one game against
each machine. The time limit was 25 minutes per side.
Despite a 5-0 first round blitzkrieg by the humans, the
computers managed to secure 7 points out of the remaining 20
games--a moral victory for the machines, given their dismal
showings in the two prior Harvard Cups.
Mankind's domination was reflected in the final standings,
however, as Michael Rohde and Sergey Kudrin won the $600 and
$400 cash prizes for which the GMs were eligible by finishing
5-0 and 4-1, respectively. Rohde also took home the Harvard
Cup trophy for the best overall score. The three other GM
participants, Patrick Wolff, John Fedorowicz and Max Dlugy,
tied with Heuristic Software's Socrates program at 3-2.
Mephisto RISC, a dedicated chess computer, finished with an
even score of 2.5-2.5.
Poor performances by three entrants kept the machines from
achieving a respectable result. Knightstalker and Chessmaster
3000, two inexpensive software packages, only scored a
combined 1.5 points out ten games, while the Fidelity Elite
Premier, a dedicated machine with a 2400 rating as certified
by the USCF Computer Rating Agency, got shutout.
It is generally acknowledged that computers are at their best
in tactical positions, as John Fedorowicz found out the hard
way in his last round loss to Heuristic.
